Roof Crew, Grab Your Corner
As I looked out of the office window, I saw cars swerving around what seemed to be a large pile of trash in the middle of the road in front of the church. Concerned that it would cause an accident, I grabbed a friend and headed out to clean up the mess. As we approached the road, we realized that the heap was not trash at all, but a man lying unconscious in the middle of the road. Did a car hit him? Did he pass out from the heat? As I stood trying to figure out what was going on, my friend grabbed the distressed man’s shoulders as if to pick him up and then looked up at me…
Mark 2
Jesus was in Capernaum teaching the Word of God to a full house—so
full that some were peaking in through the windows and straining to
hear His voice from outside the house. As he taught, the ceiling above
him began to move, dust and pieces falling to the floor all around.
Soon there was an opening large enough for four faces to appear. Not
content to just watch from the roof, they were coming in from above.
Slowly and carefully, this roof crew lowered a distressed man on his cot
for the Master to see. Then this happened:
Mark 2:5When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of thepalsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
God’s Word will always teach us Who God is and then challenge us to
be more like Him. We can see from this story that teaching the Word (v.
2), forgiving sin (v. 5), and relieving physical pain (v. 11-12) were important to Jesus.
Our job is to be the roof crew. We can identify people in need and lower them to Him.
“We REACH out of love.”
Like our Master, we reach out of concern for our city and
communities.
God sent His Son into the world because He loved the world.
“We REACH together.”
We can reach farther and we can reach more together.
This roof crew worked as a team to lower the distressed one to
the only One Who could help
“We REACH for His glory.”
Our goal is to lift up the name of Jesus, not draw attention to
ourselves.
We want to see the reaction from the people who saw the roof
crew in action: they were all amazed and glorified God.
…my friend looked at me expectantly, waiting for me to act. I grabbed
the legs of the man lying in the road and as my friend heaved him by
the shoulders and together we lifted him out of the road to safety. We were the road crew. But we had also been the man in the road before. Someone told us, showed us, lifted us, removed us from danger and pointed us to Jesus. We were ready to act when we saw someone else
in that place.
Roof crew, grab your corner of the cot and reach your community with
the love of Christ.
