Never Faltered
Do you remember the feeling you had walking down the aisle to be married? Maybe the emotions you had during a graduation ceremony? Whether there are feelings of excitement or anxiety, emotions are usually running high before a big event. Some people get cold feet the day before the big day while others are anchored by their commitment to the task. What is your usual response the day before a big event?
Four days before Resurrection Sunday is Maundy Thursday. Maundy comes from the Latin word ‘ Mandatum” meaning command or instructions. On Maundy Thursday, the day before his death, Jesus gave his disciples both meaningful and memorable instructions. (John 13:1-17)
So what can we learn on this Maundy Thursday?
Jesus taught His disciples that there is honor in humility. Jesus, with a towel in one hand and a basin in the other, washed the disciples’ feet performing the role of a lowly servant. This would have been humiliating for the disciples, but sometimes it is through humiliation that one learns humility. Jesus modeled His message of service by humbly serving His disciples so that they would do likewise and honor their Father which is in Heaven. (John 13:1-17)
Remember today the importance of humbly serving others because it brings pleasure to Jesus and honor to the Father.
Not only did Jesus serve on that day but He also celebrated.
Jesus taught His disciples to remember the works of God. In the Upper Room, with the bread and the wine, Jesus took time to celebrate Passover. God had been good to Israel by delivering the nation from bondage in Egypt and now the disciples unknowingly would be celebrating Passover with the Lamb of God, who has come to deliver all nations from the bondage of sin. (Luke 22:1-65)
Remember today to celebrate the goodness of God, not only for of His past works but His present work in your life.
Jesus taught His disciples to focus on His Father’s kingdom. Have you ever sat at the table with someone that you knew would stab you in the back? Jesus must have struggled with mixed emotions. Judas would betray him, Peter would deny him, and the rest of His disciples would soon be scattered because of His departure. Despite being hurt, Jesus was laser-focused.
After the Last Supper, Jesus prepared Himself for what lay ahead by fasting and praying in the midst of His emotions. Jesus was committed to the call, He was committed to us all. All that was ahead for Him. He endured it all for you! (Isaiah 50:1-10) Remember today to stay focused on Jesus. His commitment to you has never waned, His Love for you has never faltered.
